International Women’s Day – Building LEGO Is My Dream Job

LEGOLAND DISCOVERY CENTRE BIRMINGHAM PUTS THE SPOTLIGHT ON MASTER MODEL BUILDER MICHELLE THOMPSON IN CELEBRATION OF INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY

To celebrate International Women’s Day, LEGOLAND Discovery Centre Birmingham is paying homage to its Master Model Builder, Michelle Thompson.

As a child, Michelle Thompson loved playing with LEGO, taking every opportunity to build anything that her mind could imagine. However, she never thought that when she grew up, there would be a job out there that would allow her to build LEGO, all day, every day.

The role of a Master Model Builder includes the building, repairing and maintaining of LEGO structures throughout the Discovery Centre, as well as mixing with all visitors at the attraction and helping them with top tips on how to build their wonderful creations.

To become Birmingham’s Master Model Builder, Michelle applied to a ‘Brick Factor’ event, where participants are put through their paces in the form of timed building challenges against other candidates.

After making it through to the interview stage, Michelle landed what she describes as her ‘dream job’ almost five years ago, and she hasn’t looked back since!

Over the years she built more LEGO creations than she can count, with one of her latest builds being the attraction’s Miniland’s very own Primark, built from 2988 Lego bricks – the smallest Primark in the world!

Michelle Thompson, Master Model Builder at LEGOLAND Discovery Centre Birmingham, said: “This really is my dream job, I never thought I would be able to take my favourite hobby and make a living out of it. It’s so rewarding to be creative every day and meet all the amazing children that visit the attraction.

“I have been fortunate enough to create some wonderful builds over the years, but I especially enjoy the event builds for Halloween and Christmas. My biggest build so far has been the life size fireplace which lights up, and I always enjoy creating things to do with pirates as I used to do this as a child.

“I am delighted LEGOLAND Discovery Centre decided to pay homage to me for International Women’s Day. Personally, I have always been proud of my job and I’ve never experienced any stigma that LEGO is ‘just for boys’, and I hope that that isn’t an opinion held today. LEGO is the perfect medium for all creative minds and is a great way to help children develop. I’m pleased to say I see an even mix of girls and boys at the attraction, and they all have amazing imaginations.”
