Stagecoach Midlands and VEV pave the way for shared EV infrastructure with first electric truck charge

  • eHGV charge at Nuneaton bus depot marks the initial step towards a new B2B charging service from Stagecoach
  • Shared charging network aims to accelerate EV uptake across HGV, last-mile delivery, refuse collection and blue-light services

Stagecoach, the UK’s largest bus and coach operator, and e-fleet solutions specialist VEV have successfully completed their first third-party electric HGV charge at Stagecoach’s Nuneaton bus depot in Warwickshire.

The Nuneaton site, equipped with 45 high-powered EV chargers and an on-site solar energy system, successfully trialled VEV’s award-winning smart charging and digital energy management platform on the eHGV.

The milestone supports Stagecoach’s plans to open its charging infrastructure to businesses during off-service hours, announced earlier this year. This initiative is designed to generate a secondary income stream while helping to decarbonise wider transport operations, serving use-cases such as HGV fleets, last-mile delivery vehicles, refuse collection services and emergency response units.

Marvin Smith, Head of Solutions Sales at Stagecoach, said:
“This is a huge step forward for the team as we continue to test and refine our offer before rollout more broadly. What we’re building is truly unique, with wide bays that offer plenty of space for large vehicles, clean infrastructure and no queues.”

The achievement forms part of a broader regional electrification initiative led by VEV to support the deployment of 150 new electric buses across depots in Leamington, Nuneaton, Rugby and Chesterfield. Alongside new chargers, solar power has been introduced at Chesterfield, Leamington and Nuneaton depots to reduce grid dependency, with forecast lifetime savings exceeding £1 million.

Simon Cubitt, Commercial Director for Bus and Coach at VEV, added:
“We couldn’t be prouder to be supporting Stagecoach with their ambitions for B2B charging as a key opportunity to help offset the costs of electrifying their fleet, while helping other operators to start their own EV journey.

“Stagecoach has truly been leading the way to create an infrastructure network that serves the entire transport industry and the surrounding communities. We can’t wait to do more!”
