Health centers sit at the core of American healthcare, even though the recognition has not always matched the responsibility. Today, one in seven Americans relies on a health center for care. That level of reach positions health centers as more than supportive providers. They function as durable pillars of the system.
Dr. Shantelle Simpson, President and CEO of Appalachian Mountain Health, argues that it is time to reconsider how health centers are viewed. Under her leadership, Appalachian Mountain Health has evolved into one of the fastest-growing health centers in Western North Carolina. The annual operating budget increased from roughly $4 million to $38 million. The workforce reached 250 employees. Patient volume expanded by 78%. Those are the indicators of a system performing at scale rather than operating on the margins.
They Work Hard, Move Fast, and Deliver Skilled Care
Many people assume health centers are limited. Appalachian Mountain Health proves the opposite. The organization has expanded medical, dental, behavioral health, women’s health, pediatrics, pharmacy, and mobile services across six counties, with coordination that rivals that of larger systems. More than 17,000 patients were treated across over 70,000 visits last year alone. This level of access requires experienced physicians, nurse practitioners, dentists, and pharmacists working in structured teams.
Dr. Simpson has made that structure a priority. “The time has come for health centers like Appalachian Mountain Health to stand boldly as true medical homes delivering high-quality, compassionate care,” she says.
Mobile services are a clear example of how skill and urgency support each other. The Mobile Medical Unit delivered 2,431 visits in 2025. Patients received care directly at shelters and supportive housing sites. That level of responsiveness is not common in healthcare. It is built through discipline, staffing, and a culture that prioritizes meeting people where they are.
Whole-Person Care Is the Baseline, Not a Tagline
Appalachian Mountain Health has integrated whole-person care into daily operations. The structure ensures that a patient who walks into primary care can be immediately connected to behavioral health, dental care, pharmacy support, or school-based services, depending on their needs.
The approach is about maintaining continuous care. Behavioral health providers sit within primary care teams. Dental screenings extend into schools. Pharmacy services support mobile visits, so prescriptions are not delayed. Medicaid navigation is done in-house to reduce financial barriers for families. Nearly 200 cases were supported last year alone.
Affordability plays a major role. Health centers are required to offer sliding fee scales and serve individuals regardless of insurance status. Appalachian Mountain Health follows that commitment while expanding services that larger systems often consider out of scope. The model proves that affordability and high-quality care can coexist.
They Employ Some of the Best Providers in the Region
Behind the clinical expansion sits a major internal transformation. Appalachian Mountain Health’s workforce reached 250 employees systemwide, and more than 30 clinicians have been added. Professional development partnerships with Western Carolina University have strengthened leadership skills across the workforce. A new mental health benefit offers counseling to employees and dependents.
“Our goal is to be the gold standard for community health centers, not just in our region, but across the country,” says Dr. Simpson.
Appalachian Mountain Health stands as an example of what modern community health can achieve. With financial strength, integrated care, and experienced clinicians, the organization demonstrates that health centers are not placeholders. They are fully capable healthcare systems serving thousands.
